How to Safely Pack Fragile Items for Shipping

Packing fragile items is often the most stressful part of moving. Special packaging is necessary for shipping these items because they are easily breakable. Handling delicate items is tricky and challenging since they are prone to damage during transport. Although they are packed with multiple layers of packaging materials, the risk of damage remains due to bumps on the road and shifting of boxes during shipping. Here’s how you can package fragile items safely for shipping and reduce the probability of breakage.

Choose the Right Packaging Boxes

Choose high-quality and rigid cardboard boxes with double or triple walls to pack these items. It is ideal to choose a slightly larger box than the size of the fragile item.  Fill the empty space in the box and wrap it with dunnage. Moreover, you can rely on some professional and expert packaging services. They ensure efficient and reliable personalized crating and packaging services so that your items are properly packed and shipped safely.

Use Cushioning Materials

It is crucial to wrap fragile items in soft, cushioning material. This provides support, keeps the materials in place, and prevents the shifting of items in the box. Wrap items like glass jars, containers, electronic equipment, ceramic materials, porcelain, paintings, antiques, and mirrors in plenty of dunnage and foam pallets. If there is still empty space in the internal packing of the item, cover it with airbags and pack peanuts, bubble wrap, and crumpled packing paper. You can also strengthen the box with corrugated cardboard to provide extra care.

Avoid Overloading Boxes

When you pack fragile items, don’t place heavier boxes on top. Put lighter boxes on top and heavier boxes on the bottom to maintain the balance and prevent breakage. The average weight of boxes should be between 3-5 kg. To streamline the packing and shipping process, avoid overloading boxes. It’s a good idea to leave some empty space between boxes containing delicate items. This ensures the safe packing of fragile items for shipping.

Enhance Shipping Safety

To store delicate items, use an effective plastic shelving system. It is a multi-functional system, and its dunnage provides maximum stability, particularly on the bottom shelves, to prevent the risk of damage to fragile items. To further enhance safety, contact professional shelving experts, as they can provide high-quality storage layouts. Plastic Shelving is an efficient storage solution that optimizes space and protects fragile items during shipping.

Attach Handling Instruction Labels

To protect fragile items, label the boxes containing these items. The instruction label will help in handling, transportation, and storage of your shipment during the move. A label or sticker saying “fragile items” provides a safety gesture to couriers, indicating that the package should be handled with extra care. Displaying a fragile item label also ensures that your shipment is in good hands. You can add another label that says “handle with care” for breakable materials. However, it is best to label the box on the top for protection of fragile items.
